Usurper, "Blood Passion"

I have to go to bed "early" for work tomorrow, but here's some ridiculously heavy black metal from Diabolosis (1995), the first album of Chicago stalwarts Usurper. The obvious description is Hellhammer/Frost taken to a gut-busting extreme, and in that these dudes are a lot like Winter. But listen to that greasy main riff--it wouldn't sound out of place on an Alice In Chains track or an early sludge album. Long before "USBM," Usurper were playing a distinctively American strain of black metal, and one that actually sounded American. This is Lucifer's blues.

  1. I CAN'T LIE, I'D PREFER SOLAR METAL, OR (BECAUSE I'M AN OPEN-MINDED NIGGER) MASTODON OR GOJIRA. STILL THIS IS A NICE TUNE TO SUCK MY BOYFRIEND'S DICK TO

  2. You know, for all the hate it gets, most American black metal is really cool! Early Krieg is exactly the kind of thing someone like noktorn would like if it wasn't a pasty american guy's project (but it is, so for him it's like looking in a mirror, and he hates it). Leviathan is one of the only projects to do something interesting with the "suicidal" thingy besides Silencer. Grand Belial's Key actually had riffs and NS-oriented lyricism beyond "hail hiyttler fukk jews lol" boredom.
etc. etc... americans please make more BM

    1. "Americans please make more BM" -- Couldn't agree with you more, that's why this New Wave of False Black Metal shit is so frustrating! And yeah, I didn't mean to suggest that there haven't been a lot of good US bands in the past, or that there aren't good ones today. GBK is legit, but none of the Krieg or Leviathan I've heard has impressed me at all.

    2. Regarding USBM I think Judas Iscariot wrote some of the best black metal from any country ever. Havohej is certainly near the top of my list too.

This Usurper track is really good.

Wow, what a track! That was like getting raped by an eight ton mammoth, only better! Indeed, there is good American black metal out there - Krieg has made a couple of more than decent albums, bands like Raw Hatred and Blasphemous Crucifixion absolutely rip, Masochist was a brilliant early BM band, and Thornspawn is the band Averse Sefira wish they could be - totally chaotic and violent black fuckin' metal!

    1. Hahaha dope, glad you like it! Definitely check out the full length, I haven't listened to it in a long time but now wanna revisit. Great call on Raw Hatred, they were fucking SICK, and I keep meaning to buy something by them. As far as old-school American shit goes, I really dig Demoncy (but again, don't know it well).

    2. To be honest, I never delved too deep into their later stuff aside from a few tracks here and there (which I can't remember anything about). I'll have to give them a go!
