The Birthday Party, "Dull Day"

I'm sick all the time and it's getting really fucking frustrating. Here's a song about being really fucking frustrated. For those of you who don't know The Birthday Party, this was the band that metamorphosed into Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds (after some key lineup changes). For those of you that haven't heard of Nick Cave, remedy that immediately. The Birthday Party hated being called goth--because they were clearly doing something that tapped into very old musical currents and went beyond any one scene--but they were goth as fuck in spite of themselves. People tend to talk most about their even noisier and more chaotic material like Junkyard, and that stuff's very cool, but my heart belongs to the pulsating bohemian art-songs of Prayers On Fire.

Writing reviews tomorrow.

  5. Whoa whoa whoa, you're a Nick Cave/Birthday Party fan? I'm pleasantly surprised, I must admit. His work is some of the stuff outside of metal that appeals to me in a similar way as metal, though though a different lens, shall we say. And this track is perfect for the dreary weather here today. Good post!

  6. @B: Hahah yeah I started listening to 80s goth shit in high school, before I even owned a Slayer album! And my friend and I have been writing songs for a band in that vein. Deathrock/postpunk is up there with metal and hardcore for me. I did a Wire post a while back but you must've missed it.

  7. All I listened to in high school was Lydia Lunch and Sonic-Youth's first four albums.

Before that, all I listened to in middle school was Metallica's first four albums, Black Sabbath, Celtic Frost's "Into the Pandemonium", Morbid Angel, and Nirvana.

    Funny how that worked out.
